Spinach Kale Smoothie

Time to up your healthy habits with our Spinach Kale Smoothie. It’s made with plant-based whole foods that are nutrient dense such as pineapple, banana and coconut water.

If you’ve never thought of yourself as a green smoothie person, it’s time to get past that. If you’ve had them in the past and thought it tasted like grass or was just downright gross, then someone did you wrong.

I’ve learned how to make green smoothies that my kids love, their friends love and I crave too. And yeah, i was that mom who ate Lucky Charms for dinner and called myself a vegetarian. I’ve come a long way on my wellness journey and love helping others fall in love with plants too!

I hope you enjoy this spinach kale smoothie and share it with your loved ones!

Is kale or spinach better for smoothies?

Both types of leafy greens are great in green smoothies. If you’re just starting out with smoothies, I suggested using spinach for the first week or so. As your tastebuds adjust and you start to crave the greens (it will happen!) then it’s time to bring on the kale. Kale is a more bitter green and can leave a bite in the smoothie if not paired with the right ingredients, which I talk about later.

Is it OK to put raw kale in a smoothie?

Raw kale is great in a smoothies because it’s high in fiber and the blender will break down the plant walls so it’s easy to absorb in your body. I recommend starting with baby kale for the most mild flavor.

You can also use full kale leaves, just remove the stem which is the most bitter part. You can feed that part to your dog, chickens or compost it.

In this Spinach Kale Smoothie, I used curly kale and made sure to pull the stems off with my hands before I blended.

Secret to make a kale smoothie not taste gross?

Making anything healthy not taste gross is my mission in life, including a kale smoothie. After many failed attempts, I’ve learned a few things that make all the difference what it comes to kale. Here’s my top 5 tips:

  1. Blend kale with citrus to cut the bitterness. Lemon, oranges, pineapple, clementines and grapefruit all work great.
  2. Start with a mixture of 1/2 spinach and 1/2 kale in your smoothie to give your tastebuds time to adjust.
  3. Baby kale is the most mild type of kale— start here
  4. Remove the stems of the kale leaves before blending
  5. Add more fruit to overpower the kale taste

This spinach kale smoothie is a great transition smoothie if you’re trying to add more greens to your diet.
