Dragon Fruit Smoothie

This vibrant dragon fruit smoothie is naturally sweetened and loaded with healthy ingredients. It’s also perfect for a nutrition-packed breakfast or a filling snack.

Made with vegan, gluten-free and paleo ingredients, this dragon fruit smoothie comes together easily and tastes just as good as it looks.

Dragon fruit, also known as Pitaya, comes from a fruit-bearing cactus. It tastes similar to a kiwi or pear. You’ll find dragon fruit with either white flesh or a bright magenta-colored flesh. The dragon fruit with magenta flesh is sweeter and has more antioxidants than the white version. That’s what we’re using in this dragon fruit smoothie recipe to create a beautiful pink hue (plus, a boost of antioxidants!).

Full of sweet, tart and zesty tropical flavors, this creamy and delicious pink smoothie will brighten your day. Added bonus: it delivers healthy and nutritious ingredients to your body.

The health benefits of dragon fruit

Dragon fruit is loaded with fiber, so it makes a filling breakfast or snack when added to a smoothie.

  • Vitamin C. Dragon fruit contains high levels of vitamin C, a powerful antioxidant that supports a healthy immune system.
  • Iron. One cup of dragon fruit has 8% of the recommended daily iron needs.
  • Magnesium. Dragon fruit contains 17% of the daily recommended magnesium intake. Magnesium is an important dietary mineral that promotes bone health. It’s also beneficial in balancing the neurotransmitters associated with anxiety and depression.
  • Prebiotics. Dragon fruit contains prebiotics, which help to promote a healthy gut.

Dragon fruit pairs well with tropical fruit like papaya, mango, passion fruit, bananas and pineapples. Berries, lemons and limes are also delicious when combined with dragon fruit.

What can I mix with dragon fruit?

Mix dragon fruit with any type of non-dairy milk for a creamy, vegan smoothie. This recipe calls for almond milk. But we love blending it with coconut milk or oat milk too. Dragon fruit also blends well with coconut milk yogurt or a frozen banana. It can be blended and mixed with pure fruit juice like lemon or lime juice for a light summer treat.

How do you cut dragon fruit?

First, cut dragon fruit in half lengthwise. Second, use a spoon to scoop out the flesh, the same way you would an avocado. Then, cut the dragon fruit into cubes with a knife. Don’t eat the skin—it’s not edible.

Quick Tip! If you can’t find dragon fruit in the produce section, look in the freezer section of your grocery store. Along with the other frozen fruit, you’ll find freezer packs of dragon fruit puree.

Your taste buds will love this delightful pink smoothie full of incredible health benefits!
